SUMMARY:Tharparkar Appeal
DESCRIPTION:Major parts of Thar Desert fall in Tharparkar and Umerkot Districts. The area is arid and semi arid\, recurring droughts\, quality and access to water are among major problems of area. Tharparkar is the largest district spread over an area of 47\, 91\,025 acres (19\,637 sq kms) and population is about 1.4 million souls. Majority of inhabitants depend on rain fed agriculture and livestock. Umarkot is the gate way to Thar Desert. It exists at the border of barrage and arid region. It lies in the southeastern part of Sindh. It has a human population of 0.7 million. The majority of the inhabitants (70 %) of this area is dependent on agriculture. Agriculture is lifeline for the people and water is a rock/foundation on which it is based. \nSince last couple of years\, this sector is subject to vagaries of weather and facing consistent water shortage. Apart from natural calamities and disasters\, manmade water shortage\, constraints imposed by policy makers who are mostly tied with the MNCs/Donors aprons\, removal of subsidies by Government and withdrawal of other incentives have added up to the sorry state of this sector. \nSindh in general and this region in particular is rich in wind\, biomass and solar energy opportunities. Hence\, the need of time is to develop\, introduce & implement the wind\, biomass and solar energies based technologies in this area for development; and to develop the physical ways and means through human capital to restructure the agriculture system and empower the primary stakeholders and devise multidimensional planning for the development of community. Mismanagement of resources and ineffective policies result in shape of social exclusion\, gender imbalances and increasing poverty. So there was need of such organization which can play active role in organizing communities and empower the marginalized sectors of society. \nThis was realized by a group of like minded people of Thar and Umerkot area and formed\, in spring 2003 and got registered with Societies Registration Act 1860 in 2005. Alkhidmat strives for the social change in which people need to be organized so that they can set the pace and direction of development\, change and related policies. Simultaneously the organization believes in educating and mobilizing people with respect to social\, political and economic issues on the basis of sound knowledge and information as they can effectively play their role.

SUMMARY:Al-Khidmat Foundation’s Relief Activities
DESCRIPTION:As soon as news of emergency situation was received\, local volunteers of Al-Khidmat Foundation Pakistan started relief operation that was led by Dr. Syed Tabassum Jaffri (President\, Al-Khidmat Foundation Sindh) and Mr. Mir Muhammad Baledi (President\, Al-Khidmat Foundation Tharparkar).\nOn 7th March\, Al-Khidmat Karachi’s volunteers and doctors\, led by Mr. Manzar Aalam\, took two trucks of aid to the affected regions. The aid consisted of 400 dry ration packets\, 600 liters milk\, 300 ton pack meat\, 2 ambulances\, 12 cartons of medicines\, and clean drinking water bottles. The aid was distributed in Mithi on 8th and 8th March\, 2014. \nIn association with PIMA Relief\, Al-Khidmat Foundation arranged medical camp in front of District Head-quarter Hospital Mithi\, where 3 doctors assisted by 5 paramedical staff medically examined more than 1200 patients. Moreover\, Al-Khidmat Foundation also arranged medical camps in Islamkot\, Chachar\, and Nagarpar. Free medicines have been provided to patients and two of Al-Khidmat Foundation’s ambulances are being used to transport the patients to and from the hospital. \nDirector Disaster Management Al-Khidmat Foundation\, Mr. Ejazullah Khan along with his team reached Mithi. A kitchen has been constructed in Mithi that will be used to cook food for the affectees.\nAl-Khidmat Karachi’s relief team led by President Al-Khidmat Karachi\, Engineer Abdul Aziz\, will carry aid to affected areas tomorrow inshAllah. The aid will contain medicines as well as 1500 wheat packs (10kg each) and 1500 packs (500 grams each) dry milk.

SUMMARY:Water For Life Appeal
DESCRIPTION:During the drought years\, women and children suffer more. The Thari population is no longer able to survive the period of drought\, despite working day and night; more than 90 percent of them find themselves in a cycle of bad debt to moneylenders from whom they have borrowed money at usurious rates. In addition there are some cultural and religious issues which makes the problem worse for some Tharis; the members of lower castes or ‘Shoodren’ are not allowed to fetch water or even come near the resource ‘owned’ by the higher castes known as ‘Brahman’. This has pushed the lower castes further beyond the poverty line. Water is the essence of health and of life itself; it also plays an important role in human recreation and relaxation. Safe and accessible water is now clearly recognized as a fundamental human right. The current plight of the Thari people is an affront to human dignity and their situation can be improved dramatically\, easily and cost effectively.
